Manga: Vampire Knight

Vampire Knight is a shoujo manga written by Matsuri Hino, this series has been adapted to 26 anime episodes, the manga itself is still ongoing, the latest volume is vol. 10.

Yuki Cross is the heroine of this story, she lost her childhood memories, her earliest memory began in a snowy night when she was attacked by one vampire and ironically saved by the another, Kaname Kuran. Kaname then requested Headmaster of Cross Academy, Kaien Cross to adopt her. Years later, Kaien brought another child with him, Zero Kiryu. Zero was attacked by a vampire who killed his parents, this incident resulted in his hatred toward vampires. Both of them then grew up together under the headmaster’s care.

Kaname, Yuki, Zero

With his idealism to create a world where vampires can coexist peacefully with humans, Kaien Cross established a school night for vampires. He appointed Yuki and Zero to be the prefect, their responsibility is to protect the human students from the vampires. Kaname Kuran is the head student of the night school, he watches Yuki from afar and clearly shows how much he cares for her. Yuki always admires Kaname since the day he saved her, however she also have a big concern for Zero, her childhood friend.

Through a twisted fate, Zero becomes a vampire and bites Yuki. Because he was a human, he will eventually become a level E vampire, a condition when he will lose his sanity and become a heartless monster. To prevent the progress, Yuki is willing to give her blood to Zero. Like Kaname, Zero also cares alot about Yuki, even though he is more subtle than Kaname. The complicated relationship between them is the main plot of the story.

Vampire Knight is my guilty-pleasure, I mean just look at the two main characters, they are super gorgeous and willing to do anything for the heroine (damn you Yuki, you are so lucky!) I love the beautiful art works, the story flows smoothly with unpredictable plot, but the main appeal of this story is the characters. The characters are not only well-drawn, they also have interesting personality and background.

Many people speculates who Yuki will choose in the end. In my opinion, she will be with Kaname and she has already choose him in the latest chapters. However, I also don’t mind if Yuki choose Zero in the end. Both guys are hot, she can get both of them and that will be a great ending!

If you weren't there for, I wouldn't be here You're the beginning of my world

Chapter 26 is my favorite chapter, when both Yuki and Kaname reveals their true feeling to each other. And from this chapter I realized how much Kaname means for Yuki, it’s clear that he is not merely her crush.

Chapter 41 is the chapter when Yuki kisses her Kaname-sama! And she initiates it! Kaname is the one who always iniates everything, that’s why it’s good to see Yuki is the one who makes the first move. No matter what she will return to his side, this is a confirmation of her love for him.

Zero and Yuki in the middle of snow storm, a reflection of their relationship?

Zero and Yuki

I feel bad for Zero throughout the series, his life is very tragic and he cannot even get the love of his life. Seriously, the author better write a happy ending for this boy. As for his relationship with Yuki, this boy is deeply in love with Yuki but he knows she is in love with Kaname, therefore he never really tried to confess to her until chapter 46 when he finally kisses her. From my observation, Yuki do really care about Zero, but it’s more like love between siblings. She treats him like her brother, I never see any romantic feelings from her towards him, her heart belongs to Kaname all along.

Manga Scores: 4 out of 5

Recommended: Yes, this is a good shoujo manga, once you read it, you will be addicted! I don’t really like the anime though, but I think it’s an okay adaptation (3 out of 5 for the anime).
